Making Patterns… and a Photo Print sale

The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design – Module 2

I signed up to the second module of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design online course but I’ve hardly done any actual work – gargh… (well, module 2 is more about reading about trends etc but the point is I really can’t afford the course but on a whim decided to click ok and it was too late to cancel (when I came to my senses lol)).

I’ve downloaded all the course materials so it’s not a total waste but I’m too stressed as no proper work but I don’t want to give up and stop studying and trying things out.

Here’s some quick mockups… for the first weeks homework – not that happy with them – I do rather like the 2nd plate set especially the mug and small plate so might have a further play with that one.

Tribal Leaf Graphic Motif…

I signed up to “The Making it in Design School” Summer Camp which started a few days ago – I signed up to two of the levels but picked just one to work on as I have also signed up to the Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search 2014 which starts on Tuesday so that should keep me busy for a bit!

I scanned a doodle and tidied it up and had a play… I do love pulling shapes out of other shapes and I can get carried away so I have to stop!! I seem to end up with a leaf shape all the time!!?!?

Here’s some swim suit mock ups – the brief is for Retro Geometrics on Swim Wear (there are shorts too) and the colour palette was also chosen for inspiration.

I do like the bottom two … the bottom left needs changes to make it work… hmmm…

I decided to add some of the patterns to the Print All Over Me website to see how they look on different products – these are for sale so go check it out!

I will update with the final submission and link to the gallery which goes live later this week once it’s finally completed – I hope to submit today or tomorrow.

Procrastinating on the final piece for the summer school I went off on a slight different angle and got these…

I’ve decided to submit this one as I have other work to do and really needed to submit something by tonight.

More Sea Anemones…

I do like dismantling previous motifs … you end up with even more motifs for even more patterns… čÖé

I was playing about with my Sea Anemone ‘Mouth’ motif (see previous post) – and I transformed/blended and deleted bits of two of the below motifs…

hought I'd play with the shape a little - also switching colours around to see what happens...

… and ended up with these…

I have yet to the Sea Fleas leaping around some cups… I think I need some sleep first.

oops.. nearly forgot to add this one I did earlier… same motif as above with some various changes in stroke/colour etc.

Though I’d add a little burst of colour at the sides… bacteria anyone?

I moved the motif around itself turning into a ‘sun’ star burst effect – I’ve removed segments and parts to see what else was in the form.

One Poop or Three?

Tesla Pups!

I was thinking of trying to screen print my Tesla pup onto some fabric.

As the little guy is all about geometrics then a normal square might just be a bit too normal… triangular cushion would probably suit better… also reflects his poop ick

I didn’t spend much time on colour options as wasn’t sure if I wanted kids colours… ie: primary… this then led me to think┬átertiary colours čśŤ

what do you think?

(ps: he was born from this pattern from the ABSPD module one class ‘deconstructing patterns’ ┬áLINK to my previous blog post)

I bought a Cameo silhouette and have yet to try it properly – did make some gift boxes for jewellery pieces I made and sold at Christmas and tried cutting some felt (mixed results) but I keep meaning to try cutting a stencil and screen printing something.

I’m slightly reluctant as my last attempt ended in ruining a whole screen and I somehow managed to do it the wrong way round! gargh.

I was trying to make a rag doll of a stop motion character that I made a few years ago –

Clara – the stop motion puppet who makes her own stop motion puppets

Her worst nightmare… being a dolly… a rag doll type of dolly – gargh!

RunnyCustard: Clara Production Gallery &emdash; Clara Production images

I want to make her mini puppets too and her bag with a sketch book inside (maybe not the sketchbook?)

Clara - rag doll test

I’m thinking I should try again but choose something that is easier to print and sew up – the Clara doll test version had a funny neck and her fingers need to be in a ‘mitten’ shape as sewing the fingers was awkward and looked terrible.

Triangular Tips

the following patterns came originally from the blue shell like doodle (lower left corner)

random doodles and mark makings

I’m suppose to be getting on with a ‘underwater’ themed (unofficial!)┬áassignment but I do like to play and dismantle patterns to create more motifs and patterns.

I basically keep going until my illustrator (or photoshop) goes stupidly slow due to the massive file size issues lol

nearly forgot to add these – formed from the ‘Tesla Pups” pattern mentioned in an earlier post.
